Head of the Harbor 2019
Finishing off the official racing season, the San Diego State Men’s Crew headed up to the Port of LA for fast racing against some of the Southwest’s best crews. Unlike most fall races, Head of the Harbor offered the opportunity to get a glimpse of what side-by-side racing will be like entering the spring season with all crews simultaneously starting the 5K race next to one another.
After some late changes to the lineup, the Varsity 8 took to the water against UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine, Loyola Marymount, Arizona State, Cal State Long Beach, & Southern California. With Irvine and Santa Barbara jumping out to early leads, it was between SDSU & LMU all the way down the course fighting for that final podium spot. Coming across the docks down 3 seats, the Aztecs powered their way through the final 750m to claim a half-boat length win over LMU and a 3rd place finish overall.
Varsity 8 (18.25.27) – 3rd
(C: Sophie Sammi, 8: Sam Gabel, 7: Keyen Stanfield, 6: Jonothan Hinich, 5: Reider Martinsen, 4: Tristan Whitaker, 3: Sawyer Lowe, 2: Brian Cheung, 1: Shane Siegel)
The Novice 8+ also took to the water with a new lineup excited about the opportunity to showcase the speed they’ve demonstrated in practice working against the Varsity 8. After some confusion at the starting line, they never really found their footing and finished the race in 7th. With plenty of speed left on the course, these guys are hungry to get back out there and show that this race was an anomaly and not indicative of what lies ahead.
