The Gruenberg cup will stay in San Diego for at least one more year! Our varsity 8 was victorious against
Long Beach State in the Cup event. This year the Aztecs hosted Long Beach State and the University of
Southern California on February 26 th , with a raining start to the day; the regatta went off without a hitch.
The first event granted a happy start to the day with the Aztec JV8 blasting out of the starting blocks,
rowing clean, fast and long with a commanding lead at the finish line of 38 seconds over their
opponents. The Gruenberg Cup event between the Varsity 8’s was fielded by SDSU and LBSt, both boats
got off the start clean and fast. The Aztecs were able to continue to edge out more and more over the
course, finishing the race with open water and smiling faces.
The Novice A8 was indoctrinated into the Spring racing season with an impressive sprint in the last
200m; making up a half boat length deficit and clenching the win over USC by 1 second. Our novice 4
placed 2 nd in the 3 boat event and is excited to get more practice in that boat as they were confident in
their ability to improve. The second novice 8; fielding 4 spring recruits was not able to make up ground
on the Trojans after a few missteps. Though the majority of their race was clean, the course just was not
long enough for them to win it back. The Varsity 4 raced against fast opponents who had previously
rowed in the V8 event. Though they were not able to clench the finishing win, it was an impressive fight
from the start to the end.
The Gruenberg Cup is in it’s 4 th year of the “revival” of the event. SDSU hosted the first year and USC has
hosted the last two years. “It was fun to bring the regatta back to Mission Bay” Coach Julia Gamache
says; “it is always nice to start our season racing friendly rivals; USC and LBSt. This year was especially
great because we got to host and pull our weight again on that end.” Thank you to all the family, friends
and alumni who attended the regatta and brought all the food!
The Aztecs go to Las Vegas next weekend to participate in the first annual Lake Las Vegas Collegiate
Invitational Rowing Regatta.
